Cone Health pioneers use of fabric that cures

Patients will soon have faster healing, fewer bed sores and spend less time in the hospital-and it is all because of the bed linen. That is the conclusion of three DermaTherapy clinical trials conducted at Cone Health. Cone Health has become the first healthcare provider in the world to bring this breakthrough to patients.
The studies find that linens and gowns--often overlooked or thought of as housekeeping items-can be transformed into therapeutic tools when made with a smooth, antimicrobial fabric called DermaTherapy.
The largest trial, conducted at Cone Health's Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro, N.C., took place from December 1, 2010 through May 30, 2011. Researchers found that patients using DermaTherapy developed 81.5 percent fewer bed sores (pressure ulcers) while in the hospital.
Patients who were admitted with bedsores had a 21.0 percent reduction in wounds when discharged from the hospital, indicating that the linens promoted healing.
Other study results found a 6.4 percent reduction in the length of time spent in the hospital by patients using the antimicrobial DermaTherapy product. The other two studies occurred at The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in 2008 and 2009.

Textile Ministry functions as facilitator – Pak Minister

Pakistan’s Minister for Textile Industry, Makhdoom Shahabuddin, has said that his Ministry functions as a facilitator for the country’s textile industry and it is the responsibility of the Ministry of Power to solve the issue of gas load shedding.

At a meeting with representatives of various associations of Pakistan’s value-added textile sector, the Minister said the textile industry functions as a private sector in the country and his Ministry could only play the role of a facilitator to address the issues facing the industry.

While mentioning that the issue of electricity load shedding fell under the ambit of the Power Ministry, he stressed on the need to identify factors that hampered setting up of energy projects in the country.

He also emphasized that biogas projects could be set up in rural areas of the country to cater to domestic demand for fuel.

The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Textile has been asked to ensure the participation of the officials from the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) in the next meeting of the Ministry to be held in Karachi, Mr. Shahabuddin said.

The Minister disclosed that the Ministry had excluded 77 items from the negative list prepared for trade with India under the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status.

Bahrain plans to set up textile labs to check quality

Bahrain is considering setting up specialized laboratories for testing all textiles, fabrics and garments that enter the country.

Currently, all textiles and garments entering the Bahrain market meet the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) norms, but there are no specialised labs in the country to monitor and control quality of those goods.

Bahrain Industry and Commerce Minister, Dr. Hassan Fakhro, said they had considered setting up specialized laboratories in the past and tried to earmark a sum for the purpose, but it was not included in the final Budget. However, he is positive that the proposal would form a part of the agenda for 2013 and 2014 Budgets.

He highlighted that presently the country lacks accurate norms to assess quality of the goods, however all goods entering the country happen to be in lines with the agreed GCC norms and standards.

The National Committee for Standards and Specifications ensures observance of GCC norms. Whenever the Committee comes across any defective goods, either during a random sample check or by way of complaints to the Ministry, it instantly initiates action against the traders selling such sub-standard goods.

The Minister was responding to the query raised by the Council’s Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee and the Woman and Child Committee Vice-Chairperson, Rabab Al Arrayedh, about inspection of textiles, fabrics and garments entering the Bahrain market.

MSME Ministry bats for inclusion of Khadi in MNREGA

The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) has put forward a proposal to include Khadi spinning under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

The MGNREGA is the flagship employment programme of the Government of India, which aims at enhancing the livelihood security of people in rural areas by guaranteeing hundred days of wage-employment in a financial year to a rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.

Virbhadra Singh, Minister for MSME, said the daily wages of those employed to spin Khadi are lower than the minimum wages fixed under MGNREGA, which necessitates efforts to increase the earning of those involved in the Khadi sector as well.

Inaugurating a Khadi and Garmodyog fair in Rajasthan, the Minister said his Ministry will submit a proposal to the Union Cabinet seeking inclusion of Khadi spinning work under MGNREGA.

The Minister added that he would urge the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister to waive the loans of those Khadi weavers who are not in a position to repay the same.

He revealed that the Government is planning to introduce a Khadi mark to ensure genuineness of Khadi.

Golden spider silk on display at UK’s V&A Museum

The Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum in London will be showcasing the world’s largest pieces of cloth made from spider silk.

The display will include a brocaded shawl made from the silk of more than one million female golden orb-weaver spiders collected in the highlands of Madagascar, as well as a cape.

The public display of these items will be held for the first time from January 25 to June 5, 2012.

The two silk works that are to be on display have been created by Simon Peers, a textile artist who has lived in Madagascar for over two decades, and designer-entrepreneur Nicholas Godley.

When Godley set up a business in Madagascar, Peers came in touch with him, and the idea of reviving the extinct industry was born.

While the silk was extracted in Godley’s workshops, handloom weavers in Peers’ team weaved the two-metre shawl and a richly embroidered cape that has 1.5 kg of silk.

FTA with EU to boost India’s textile, garment exports

The early implementation of India-EU free trade agreement (FTA), negotiations for which are currently in the final stage, will increase India’s textile and garment exports, according to experts.

The India-EU FTA, to be known as the Bilateral Trade and Investment Agreement (BTIA), proposes slashing and eventual removal of duties on about 90 percent of bilaterally traded goods during the next ten-year period.

The Indian textiles industry is in broad agreement with the Government over reduction and moving towards zero-duty on European imports as it is expected to enhance exports and thus benefit the domestic firms.

Mr. DK Nair, Secretary-General of the Confederation of Indian Textiles Industry (CITI) told fibre2fashion, “We have suggested the Government that we may not include any products from the textiles and clothing (T&C) sector in India's negative list in the BTIA, on condition that the EU also does not include any T&C products in their negative list.”

“We are also open to a zero-for-zero deal for T&C products from day one. As India exports more T&C products than it imports from West Europe, early trade liberalization with EU will help our exports,” Mr. Nair explains.

Elaborating further, he says, “There are countries that already have zero duty access for textile products in the EU through their GSP scheme and other bilateral agreements. This disadvantage that we are facing currently will be removed by getting zero duty access to EU for our T&C products.”

Council for Textile Recycling launches new website

For the first time ever clothing brands, retailers, consumers, municipalities, charitable organizations, academics and recyclers are joining forces to promote the recycling of clothing and textiles.

The Council for Textile Recycling (CTR) recently released its new website aimed at educating the public on the importance of recycling all clothing and textiles, not just those that are “gently worn.”

The Council’s news website: http://www.weardonaterecycle.org mirrors the organization’s slogan – Wear. Donate. Recycle.

“Our goal is to have zero post-consumer textile waste going into landfills by 2037,” says Eric Stubin, CTR Chairman of the Board. “In the United States the average person discards 70 pounds of their old clothing, shoes and household textiles in their local landfill each year. We’re educating people that clothing and textiles are among the most recyclable items in their home.”

In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency estimates more than 25 billion pounds of clothing and textiles including clothing, linens, belts, and shoes are generated annually.

The agency also reports more than 21 billion pounds (70 lbs per person) of post-consumer textile waste ends up in landfills every year with only 15% of all post-consumer textiles enter the recycling stream.
